Umbria, Monti Sibillini

Map of Italy, Umbria

The Monti Sibillini, in the South-East of Umbria, has always been an area of astounding beauty but was only recognised as a National Park in 1993.
It is therefore a relatively young park in terms of promotion and visitors.

We have chosen this area partly because of its tranquil atmosphere but mainly because of its scenery and virgin walking territory. During your week here, you will come across breathtaking mountain views, rolling hills, deep valleys, lush vegetation and magnificent plains.

Terracotta Trails takes you along paths leading through little mountains villages clinging to the mountain sides. You will find views perhaps reminiscent of the rolling hills of Tuscany, but with more rugged mountain-scapes.

Since we started coming to this region, we have been welcomed with open arms. Now we, in turn, enjoy introducing like minded people to this area with its local culture and strong traditions.

The Umbrian countryside is renowned for its wildlife and many protected species, such as the wolf, which have been re-introduced into the National Park. The park has rich and varied
flora & fauna
thanks to the diversity of the landscape.

Birds in the Park

Monti Sibillini wild fox
Hare is abundant and "cinghiale" (wild boar) is a favourite in the local cuisine and, for meat lovers, a delight to the taste buds. For those with a preference for vegetables, there is a wide selection of seasonal produce available, as well as one of the especially famous locally grown specialities - lentils.

Perhaps the most unique and sought after flavour of the Monti Sibillini is the "tartuffo" (truffle). This has a delicate taste which can be enjoyed on pasta, bread or as a sauce on various meats. Trying this local delicacy is a must and we always ensure that it is present regularly on your menu! This is, naturally, savoured with plentiful and delicious wine and mineral water.

Within the National Park is the Piano Grande - a plain renowned for the carpet of wild spring flowers which covers this unique natural landscape. The village of Castelluccio on the plain is well known in the world of hang gliders who can often be seen launching themselves off the nearby peaks. The highest of these is Monte Vettore, which reaches an altitude of 2,476 metres. The beautiful mountains surrounding this vast plain make it a sight to behold all year round, as you will experience yourself on one of our walks. You may be familiar with the Piano Grande as it was a key set for the Franciscan epic "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" by the Italian director Zeffirelli.

Piano Grande Monti Sibillini National Park

Although the regions of Umbria and Le Marche are home to magnificent, historical towns such as Spoleto, Assisi and Ascoli Piceno, the Monti Sibillini National Park, in addition to its elegant natural beauty, boasts its own history.

Our holidays in the Monti Sibillini National Park, take you to an area still deeply rooted in its traditional working of the land and unspoilt by invading hoards of tourists. We have found that it never fails to live up to its reputation for stunning scenery. By walking along forgotten trails, meeting the local people, breathing the clean crisp mountain air and indulging in a little truffle, you will find that your holiday leaves you with enchanting memories of a unique experience.
